Overview:

Xhariep and its local municipalities are actively pursuing projects aimed at improving water supply, enhancing environmental sustainability, and upgrading essential infrastructure. Below are the highlights of these initiatives. These initiatives reflect a dedicated effort to improve water supply, environmental sustainability, and infrastructure development throughout Xhariep and its municipalities.

Projects:

Greening and Environmental Initiatives:
  • Thuma Mina Green Deeds: Engaging the community in environmental stewardship projects.
  • Construction of Springfontein Agri-Hub Warehouse: Supporting local agricultural development.
  • Good Green Deeds Project: Involving youth in cleaning and greening efforts, with 66 participants employed for awareness campaigns and environmental enhancement.

Water Sector Initiatives:
  • Bulk Water Supply: Enhancing access to water across Xhariep Local.
  • Springfontein Water and Sanitation: Upgrading facilities to improve water quality and sanitation.
  • Kopanong Local:
    1. Road rehabilitation and stormwater management.
    2. Replacement of asbestos and copper water pipes.
  • Letsemeng Local:
    1. Refurbishment of wastewater treatment works in Koffiefontein and Jacobsdal.
    2. Upgrades to bulk sewer systems in various areas.
    3. Construction of new stormwater infrastructure in Koffiefontein, Jacobsdal, and Luckhoff.
    4. New water towers and reservoirs to enhance distribution.

Infrastructure Development:
  • Upgrading Zastron Water Treatment Works and equipping raw water pump stations to ensure better water quality and availability.
  • Construction of a 27 km raw water pipeline from the Orange River to Paisley Dam, improving regional water access.
  • Ongoing upgrades to the waste water treatment works and landfill sites to enhance waste management and environmental protection.
  • Development of paved access roads and stormwater systems to improve infrastructure connectivity.
