Free State Province Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and Implementation Plan (2024)

The Climate Change Adaptation Response Strategy and Implementation Plan for Free State Province outlines the province’s approach to addressing the global challenge of climate change. It provides an overview of both current and projected changes in the region’s climate, along with the anticipated impacts of these changes. The plan also includes a comprehensive set of actions aimed at enhancing climate change adaptation efforts in Free State Province. These actions are organized into three key areas: Enablers, Crosscutting Sectors, and Specific Sectors.

-Enablers are foundational actions that support the successful implementation of the other adaptation measures outlined in the plan.
-Crosscutting Sectors are those that have a broader influence, affecting multiple other sectors.
-Specific Sectors refer to groups of activities that share common characteristics, are particularly vulnerable to climate change, and may also contribute to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This plan provides a strategic framework to guide Free State Province in building resilience to climate change while addressing key environmental and socio-economic challenges.

Free State Green Economy Strategy (2014)

A green economy strategy focuses on promoting sustainable development while minimizing environmental impacts. This approach emphasizes transitioning to renewable energy, enhancing resource efficiency, and fostering sustainable practices across sectors. Key elements include reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting green technologies, and supporting sustainable agriculture and waste management.

The Green Economy Strategy for the Free State Province (FSGES)was developed in alignment with the national green economy strategy outlined in the National Green Economy Framework and the Green Economy Accord, as well as the Free State Provincial Growth and Development Strategy. Spearheaded by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs (DETEA), this strategy aims to assist the province in several key areas:

  • Improving environmental quality and economic growth
  • Developing green industries and enhancing energy efficiency
  • Expanding productive capacity and service delivery
  • Adopting sustainable consumption and production processes
  • Improving policymaking, permitting, monitoring, and enforcement for Green Economy initiatives
  • Creating decent green jobs and building the capacity of personnel from DETEA, municipalities, and other stakeholders

By fostering collaboration among governments, businesses, and communities, the FSGES seeks to drive economic growth while ensuring environmental sustainability, ultimately contributing to a more resilient and sustainable future for all.
